A number of teenagers are routinely unable to make the intellectual connection between academic achievement and the workplace. As a result, their level of school engagement is poor. Girl Power links reading, writing, the spoken word and math to actual jobs, thus helping female students clarify the connection between those two worlds. The goal is to improve current academic performance so girls may subsequently graduate from high school and sustain themselves financially. Activities include career research, visits to community work sites, living skills workshops, and interviews with working women. Participation in formal tutoring sessions is an integral part of the program. |
