How The Contest WorksThe BAPPS Poster contest for 6th to 12th graders in Buffalo’s schools is a major effort to spread awareness about teen pregnancy prevention. We encourage students to develop a message around the theme, “A World of Reasons”. Individuals from the community judge the entries and select five winners. The winners will be chosen by a panel of judges. Prizes range: 1st place: $500, 2nd place: $400, 3rd place: $300, 4th place: $200, and 5th place: $100. The first place winner’s poster is converted into a billboard on a busy thoroughfare near his/her school. The poster is also produced into bus cards and, with the cooperation of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, 50 buses carry the poster for three months resulting in 1.3 million impressions. The teen’s message directly heightens awareness about adolescent pregnancy prevention. A small reception and ceremony are held at the winners’ schools to further spread the message of the contest. Winners are presented with plaques of recognition and press releases describing the events are sent to the news media. Since the inception of the contest eight years ago, more than 1,000 students have participated. The school or organization submitting the most entries wins FREE art supplies! This contest is sponsored by BAPPS in cooperation with the Office of the Superintendent of Buffalo Public Schools and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.
